This test is mainly ordered to help discern between the different types of anemia and to determine whether the amount of erythropoietin produced is suitable for the level of anemia present. It is usually ordered following abnormal findings on a complete blood count (CBC). Erythropoietin is ordered to help determine if an insufficiency of the hormone may be causing and/or exacerbating the anemia. Alternative Name(s): EPO
